Summary of 23 things

Hurray... I've finished! Overall this has been a great experience. I have enjoyed learning about so many new technologies and feel a little more hip with what's going on in the web world. Taking the class online has been really beneficial, I liked the flexibility to learn at my own pace.
(Although, I wish I didn't feel as rushed to get through it so quickly-having a September 30th time constraint. ) Most of the activities were engaging and helpful but some were just to cumbersome to work with or to figure out. This did open my eyes as to how much I didn't know about the web and how quickly technology is changing the way we communicate in our world.

Del.icio.us and Technorati

I put both of these activities off after the first time I viewed them. So in order to finish my 23 things, I went back and tried to understand how to use a social bookmarking manager and a blog tagging system. This is just too much for me to get a grasp on!

Concerning Del.icio.us: the podcast was awful-too much information in a boring podcast. Who is going to us this? If you have hours to research, then tag, tag, tag and tag- making sure you use filters and sources of topical information..... I don't get it. "Find people in the magic middle to filter information for you" sorry but at this time I think I'll pass.

Technorati offers a few features for the blogger at heart. When I viewed Learning Libraries 2.0 within Technorati, again I didn't get it, so I gave it a second chance and I looked at top hits-Britney Spears-again it was just a bunch of junk!

In conclusion......I think if you have HOURS and HOURS available for first figuring out and then playing around with these sites and then maybe you would find something significant to them.

Learning about audiobooks

It's great to have two other options to give to our Ipod customers -Project Gutenberg and Worldebook Fair. It was amazing to see all the titles that Project Gutenberg offers! Although I'm still a book person, I can see where Project Gutenberg has alot to offer, for example, people with eyesight problems can now enhance the font of the book for easier reading and those who travel alot and don't want to carry a book can download both ebooks and audio.

Podcasts

After accomplishing this activity I can understand where podcasts are really useful for some people especially iTunes. Podcasts can be very beneficial in a training or meeting environment, I enjoyed the podcasts used for this class. I think to view podcasts you need to have alot of time to search through the maze of podcasts available and even then might not find exactly what you are looking for. Although this technology isn't for me, I can see it as a trend that will grow over a period of time and most likely will become a commonplace for all computer users.

YouTube Video

I really enjoyed this site. It has so many great videos. I decided to look up dogs, and talking dog videos showed up. They were really funny. I think YouTube has alot of wonderful videos for all types of uses, although I am sure this site has alot of videos that I probably would be offended by. I think there are quite a few uses that we could use video for in the library: show casing performers-especially those who have performed at our children's summer programs, and programs such as our gingerbread workshop, Wii, teen nights, tween nights, etc. Also, we could video our meeting rooms so patrons could see what they look like, etc. (this would probably be more useful for the PF branch)

Web 2.0 awards list

Everyone in my family has been on craigslist, so I decided to check it out. It was pretty much what I thought it would be listings of goods, jobs, and pretty much anything a person wants to purchase.

Online Productivity

This is sooo cool. I have Wordperfect on my home computer and have had so many incidents where the end user could not read my information. Now I have a solution to my problem! This is definitely a wave of the future. Hang on Microsoft your monopoly might be coming to an end sometime in the future.
